President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu II, to uphold the peace and unity in Dagbon while continuing the legacy of the late Ya-Naa Abukari II.

The President made the call when the Regent and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Presidency to express appreciation to the government for its support during the late Ya-Naa's illness and funeral.

President Mahama described the peace in Dagbon as precious and urged traditional leaders to protect it through their conduct, decisions and relationships with the people.

“The peace of Dagbon is precious, and we must protect it through our words, our decisions and our treatment of one another,” he said.

He encouraged the Regent to maintain consultations with families and communities in the traditional area and use dialogue to address disagreements and strengthen unity.

President Mahama also expressed his condolences to the Regent following the death of his father, recalling the efforts made to secure medical treatment for the late Ya-Naa, including facilitating his treatment in South Africa.

He said the late traditional ruler's contribution to Dagbon and Ghana could best be honoured by preserving his legacy and advancing the unity he promoted.

The delegation thanked President Mahama for attending the late Ya-Naa's seven-day Islamic funeral and participating in the installation of the new Regent.

President Mahama commended Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu II for his commitment to continuing his father's work, describing the late Ya-Naa as a bridge-builder whose legacy should inspire further efforts to unite communities.

He said the Regent's installation was a reflection of the prevailing peace in Dagbon, but cautioned that his new responsibilities would require wisdom, patience, consultation and fairness.

The President reaffirmed the government's respect for Dagbon's customs, traditions and traditional institutions, stressing the importance of allowing traditional authorities to perform their duties with dignity.

He also assured the Regent that Dagbon would receive its fair share of development projects under his administration.

“As long as I remain President, Dagbon will receive its fair share of the development projects my government can undertake,” he said.
