President John Dramani Mahama has set 2030 as the target for Ghana to end exports of unprocessed mineral ores as part of efforts to promote local processing, create jobs and retain more mineral wealth in the country.
He said Ghana’s bauxite, manganese, iron, lithium and other mineral resources must support domestic industrialisation rather than leave the country in their raw state.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra on Monday, October 19, Mr Mahama said the government would pursue a phased prohibition on unprocessed ore exports, backed by legislation, mineral-specific requirements and clear implementation timelines.
“I’ve set a clear goal that by 2030, raw mineral ores should no longer leave our shores. Our bauxite, manganese, iron, lithium, and other minerals must support processing and industrial development here at home,” he said.
The President said achieving the target would require substantial investment in infrastructure, reliable and affordable energy, water supply, skilled labour and financing to support competitive local industries.
He said there are plans to modernise the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), develop domestic alumina refining and strengthen its iron and steel industry to create opportunities across the mining value chain.
Mr Mahama also identified opportunities in equipment maintenance, fabrication, laboratories, software development and recycling, urging universities and technical institutions to work closely with industry to prepare young people for skilled employment.
He said the government’s 24-hour economy agenda could help coordinate production, logistics and related services to expand industrial output and employment.
The President further called for stronger African cooperation to prevent countries from undercutting one another in negotiations with mining companies.
“Poor negotiations and the award of large mineral concessions to foreign interests leave African nations with just a pittance of the wealth that is extracted from ourselves,” he said.
He urged participants at the summit to focus on practical commitments, measurable progress and partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to Ghana and the rest of Africa.
