Crime & Punishment V/R: Customs seizes Gh¢11.2million drugs at Akatsi
MON, 19 OCT 2026

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a consignment of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, valued at GH11,208,000 at Akatsi in the Volta Region.

A highly placed source at the Customs Head Office in Accra told The Chronicle that the interception followed an intelligence-led operation.

In the heat of the operation, occupants of the Lexus Toyota being used to convey the suspected cannabis abandoned the vehicle and bolted.

According to the source, the Lexus had a fake Ghanaian registration number, thereby rendering the investigation to establish its true owners difficult.

The latest interception adds to previous efforts by Customs and other Security agencies to combat the trafficking of illicit drugs in the country.

In October 2025, Customs, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), intercepted 84 (eighty-four) bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, concealed in a shipment at one of the country's entry points.

The joint operations formed part of inter-agency efforts to disrupt the movements of prohibited substances into and out of Ghana, with intelligence gathering and cooperation playing key roles in the fight against drug trafficking.

According to the source, the Akatsi seizure underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations in detecting and intercepting suspected narcotics consignments.
