The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to undertake a nationwide school-based vaccination campaign to protect eligible girls aged nine to 14 against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer.
The exercise will be conducted in two rounds in October and November/December 2026, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), through its School Health Education Programme (SHEP), and other partners.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the HPV vaccine, improve vaccination uptake and ensure that eligible girls who have not received the vaccine are protected against HPV-related diseases.
In a press release dated October 19, and signed by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the GHS said health workers would visit schools across the country to administer the vaccine to eligible girls who had not yet received it.
“The exercise, scheduled for October and November/December 2026, aims to raise awareness of the routine HPV vaccine, improve vaccination uptake, and ensure that all eligible girls aged 9-14 years are protected against cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases,” the statement said in part.
The first round of the Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunisation (PIRI) is scheduled for Monday, October 19, to Friday, October 23.
The second round will take place from Monday, November 30, to Friday, December 4.
The GHS has called on school authorities, parents, guardians, teachers and community leaders to support the exercise and cooperate with the health teams.
It said the campaign is intended to strengthen routine immunisation and increase protection against cervical cancer and other diseases associated with HPV infection.
“The Ghana Health Service respectfully calls on all stakeholders, including school authorities, parents, guardians, teachers, and community leaders, to support and cooperate with health teams to ensure the successful implementation of the exercise,” the statement added.
