One of the six fugitives, who escaped through a hand-dug hole at the Konongo Police Cells in the Asante Akim Central Municipality, has been re-arrested from his hideout in Kumasi.
The Police has mounted intensive manhunt to recapture the remaining five fugitives.
According to authorities, the inmates made their escape through a newly dug hole leading to the Police station’s detached washrooms.
After squeezing through the hole to exit the cell, the fugitives scaled the perimeter walls and fled.
Police swiftly launched a search operation, resulting in the re-arrest of one escape in a Kumasi, while five others remain at large.
Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), speaking to the Ghana News Agency, stated that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) was taking immediate steps to reinforce the walls of the police cells.
He also outlined long-term measures, including the construction of a new police station and directing the Police administration to deploy more officers, particularly during night shifts.
Furthermore, he noted that the Municipal Security Council would upgrade the lighting system at the Police station and install CCTV cameras to monitor activity and prevent future security breaches.
At the time of filing this report, the identities of the escapees had not been disclosed.
