Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has challenged the Attorney General’s claim that Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is a flight risk, expressing confidence that the court will grant his bail pending appeal application.
The Accra High Court has set November 4, 2026, to rule on the application after hearing arguments from both sides.
Speaking to reporters after the proceedings, Atta Akyea said he found it unfortunate that the Attorney General had suggested his client could flee.
“We dwelt on the fact that there was no basis for the Attorney General to assert that he is a flight risk. I found it a bit unfortunate,” he said.
The lawyer maintained that the court should determine the application based on the relevant legal principles rather than public sentiment or comments circulating in the media.
He said he was hopeful that the court would grant the application when it delivers its ruling.
“I think that when the law is applied, it should come out. If the law is applied, the judge should release the gentleman, and then we go before the Court of Appeal,” Atta Akyea added.
