A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) national communications team, Dr Kwesi Djokoto, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of selective amnesia over the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
President John Dramani Mahama swore in Ms Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC on Monday, October 12.
Their appointments followed the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.
The appointments have attracted criticism from the opposition NPP, which alleges that Ms Agbenyo was actively involved in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) politics and played a role in the party’s 2024 election campaign.
Reacting to this on Accra-based Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, October 15, the NDC communicator said the NPP's criticism of the appointment contradicted positions its members had taken on similar matters in the past.
“Their conduct is very inconsistent. They are consistently inconsistent, and even listening to their narrative over the past few days, there’s only one phrase that can describe them: walking contradiction, a lot of hypocrisy being demonstrated,” he said.
Dr Djokoto argued that NPP members should reflect on their previous statements and conduct before criticising the current appointments, insisting that their position lacked credibility when compared with their past actions.
He also took issue with comments by NPP communicator Kamal-Deen Abdulai, who suggested that the party would remove Ms Agbenyo from office if it returned to power, arguing that she was associated with the NDC.
Dr Djokoto described such remarks as a threat to the country’s constitutional order, saying political affiliation alone should not be used as a basis for removing an Electoral Commission official.
“You listen to the same people in 2022, 2023, 2024, and when you are listening to them today, they have deliberately deleted certain aspects of our history from their minds, such that they are now able to have a certain tunnel vision,” he stated.
