A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national communications team, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, has criticised Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu for defending the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
President John Dramani Mahama swore in Ms Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC on Monday, October 12.
Their appointments followed the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.
The appointments have attracted criticism from the NPP, which has questioned Ms Agbenyo’s suitability for the position over allegations of her involvement in the NDC’s political activities and its 2024 election campaign.
In defending the appointments, Kwakye Ofosu argued that the previous NPP administration had appointed individuals to the Commission, making it necessary for the current government to address what he described as an imbalance in its political composition.
However, Kamal-Deen described the minister’s explanation as unfortunate, arguing that the institution should not be treated as a platform for partisan representation.
“If I were him, I would have been quiet on this matter. I will not say anything,” he said on Accra-based Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, October 15.
Kamal-Deen further stated that if the NPP returned to power after the 2028 general election, it would withdraw the appointment of Affi Agbenyo.
He also urged the NPP to concentrate on strengthening its electoral structures at the polling-station level ahead of the next general election.

I even need to write an article to demand the removal of Jean Mensa completely from the EC office.
