A Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Julius Kwame Anthony, says the party can retain power in the 2028 general election if Ghanaians are satisfied with President John Dramani Mahama’s performance.
He said the party’s chances would depend largely on its record in government, its unity and the credibility and competence of the candidate it elects to lead it into the next election.
Kwame Anthony made the remarks on Accra-based Channel One TV’s 'Citiuation Room' programme on Wednesday, October 14, while discussing the NDC’s prospects of retaining power after Mahama’s current term.
“I am of the view that if we are supposed to look at those things today, the NDC is the place to retain power,” he said.
Kwame Anthony cited the performance of the economy, changes in the prices of goods and services, the exchange rate and the government’s education policies as areas he believes could influence voters’ decisions.
He said the government had fulfilled its promise to introduce a no-fee stress policy to support first-year tertiary students and had removed several taxes he described as nuisance taxes.
According to him, these interventions, alongside the government’s economic management, would form part of the basis on which Ghanaians would assess the NDC ahead of the 2028 polls.
The NDC spokesperson also argued that the party’s next presidential candidate would benefit from Mahama’s record in office but acknowledged that the candidate’s personality, integrity and perceived competence would matter.
He criticised former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, questioning his economic management record during the Akufo-Addo administration.
Kwame Anthony also cited what he described as unfulfilled promises concerning the Pwalugu Dam, a proposed airport in Cape Coast and public toilets at Agbogbloshie.
“The good thing for us is that we are clear in our minds who we will be contending in that election, 2028? We will be going to that election against a candidate whose political career, the entirety of it, was built around a certain acumen when it comes to economic management,” he said.
