President John Dramani Mahama has urged churches and families to take a more active role in mentoring young people and guiding them through the pressures of modern life.

He said young people need spaces where they can ask difficult questions, develop their abilities and take on meaningful responsibilities.

The President was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 10th World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra on Wednesday, October 14.

“Our churches and our households must be places where these young people can ask honest questions, and receive thoughtful guidance, and have their abilities recognised, and be entrusted with meaningful responsibility,” he said.

Mr Mahama observed that young people are growing up in a world vastly different from that of previous generations, with technology creating opportunities and also exposing them to misinformation, constant comparisons and competing expectations.

He said many young people are also struggling to find purpose and dealing with anxieties they might find difficult to express, which is the more reason adults must respond with empathy and practical support.

The President therefore encouraged church leaders and families to become mentors who listen to young people, create opportunities for them to serve and demonstrate the integrity they expect them to uphold.

“The church should also be a safe place for children and vulnerable people. Spiritual authority entails a duty of care. We must safeguard trust through responsible conduct, clear safeguards, and accountability,” he said.

Mr Mahama further urged the church to recognise and value the contributions of women, particularly their leadership, wisdom and work in sustaining congregational life.

He said a religious fellowship preparing for the future must create room for everyone equipped to serve, regardless of gender.

The President also called on churches to promote honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace, while maintaining the moral independence to speak against injustice and suffering.
