The Deputy and Acting Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region, Bright Kwashie Ege, has filed his nomination to contest the substantive position of Regional Secretary.

Mr Ege, who has served as Deputy Regional Secretary for almost eight years, said he assumed the acting role after the substantive Regional Secretary was appointed Regional Minister.

Having served in the acting capacity for nearly two years, he said he had gained extensive experience in the administration of the party and was now ready to take on the substantive position.

Mr Ege said his time in office had exposed him to several challenges confronting party officers, particularly the absence of insurance coverage for members who work for the party.

He recounted an incident during the 2024 general elections in which a young party activist riding a motorbike while campaigning was involved in an accident but had no insurance to support him.

"During the 2024 general elections, when I was doing my monitoring in one of the constituencies, I saw a young man riding a motorbike to campaign for the party who got involved in an accident and that was it. There was no form of insurance to take care of him. So if given the opportunity to serve as Regional Secretary, providing a comprehensive insurance package for every party officer will be my number one priority," Mr. Ege recounted.

He said the proposed insurance scheme would initially cover the 504 constituency executives in the Volta Region before being extended to branch executives if the pilot proved successful.

Beyond insurance, Mr Ege identified the digitalisation of the regional secretariat as another major priority, saying it would improve administrative efficiency and facilitate faster communication between the party's various structures.

He also pledged to ensure that all 18 constituencies in the region have suitable party offices.

According to him, only about three constituencies currently have proper offices, a situation he said was inadequate for a region he described as a stronghold of the NDC.

On unemployment, Mr Ege expressed concern about the number of qualified young people working for the party who remain without jobs and struggle to meet their basic needs.

He noted that party work was largely unpaid and therefore required a system that could help party activists secure employment while continuing to contribute to the organisation.

"We have intelligent, very qualified young guys working for the party in different capacities, but they are at home struggling to feed themselves. Party work, nobody is paying you. We must ensure proper coordination and linkage between the branch, the constituency and the region so that information flows fast and every person working for the party gets some form of employment," he assured.

Mr Ege further pledged to strengthen coordination among the branch, constituency and regional structures to ensure that information from the regional secretariat reaches party members promptly.

He said improved communication and coordination would help ensure that all levels of the party remained informed and worked towards common objectives.
