The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of pursuing a calculated plan to take control of Ghana’s independent institutions.
He said the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) was part of a broader strategy rather than an isolated decision.
His comments follow criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has questioned Ms Agbenyo’s appointment over her alleged association with the governing party.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on Wednesday, October 14, the NPP lawmaker argued that the appointment was deliberate and reflected the government’s wider political objectives.
“It is a well thought-through process by the government. It is not a mistake at all. They know what they are doing,” he said.
The MP cited Parliament, the executive, the removal of the Chief Justice and developments involving the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as examples of what he described as a broader pattern of institutional control.
The NPP lawmaker cautioned members of his party against assuming that the NDC was taking the developments lightly, urging them to strengthen their grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next general election.
“They control Parliament. They control the executive. The Chief Justice has been removed. They intentionally tried very hard through the then Majority Leader to repeal the OSP law and take out that OSP. Now the target is the Electoral Commission. They are starting,” he said..
Meanwhile, the government has defended the appointment of Ms Agbenyo, describing it as an attempt to address what it considers a partisan imbalance within the commission, a justification that has drawn further criticism from the opposition.
