President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to religious inclusivity, describing Ghana's religious diversity as a national asset that must be protected to sustain peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths.
According to him, his responsibility as President requires him to serve all Ghanaians fairly, regardless of their religious beliefs, stressing that public office demands equal respect and concern for Christians, Muslims, traditional religious practitioners and citizens who profess no faith.
Speaking at the 10th World Assemblies of God Congress, themed One Mandate, Every Nation, on Wednesday, October 14, President Mahama said his Christian faith remained a source of strength but could not override his constitutional duty to every Ghanaian.
“As President, I've sworn duty to serve every Ghanaian: Christians of every denomination, Muslims, adherents of traditional religion, and even our citizens who profess no faith,” he said.
The President acknowledged that his commitment to treating people of different faiths fairly had sometimes drawn questions from some Christian leaders about his religious convictions. However, he maintained that fairness and equal treatment must guide his decisions as head of state.
He urged that Ghana's religious diversity be nurtured by strengthening relationships that allow people of different beliefs to live and work together in peace.
“Ghana's religious diversity is our most precious possession, and we must continue to nurture the relationships that enable neighbours of different faiths to live, work and care for one another,” he said.
President Mahama also drew on his personal experience growing up in a multi-faith family, noting that differences in religious beliefs had not diminished the love and affection among his siblings.
“Nevertheless, our different religions do not affect the love and affection that we share,” he said.
He further called on churches to contribute to national development by promoting honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace while maintaining their independence to speak against injustice and suffering.
