Odumase has emerged champion of the 2026 MTN Suncity Inter-Community Soccer Gala after defeating Baakoniaba 2-0 in the final to claim the GH¢30,000 grand prize.
The thrilling encounter took place at the Twene Amanfo Senior High School Park in Sunyani, bringing the three-week football competition to a successful close as part of activities marking this year's Suncity Festival.
Odumase sealed their victory through goals from Derrick Frimpong, popularly known as Oman, and Raphael Bona, whose efforts proved decisive in the final showdown.
The champions received GH¢30,000 for their triumph, while Baakoniaba took home GH¢20,000 after finishing as runners-up.
Although Baakoniaba missed out on the ultimate prize, Osman Kingsley earned individual recognition after being adjudged the overall best player of the tournament.
Odumase's Derrick Frimpong also distinguished himself by winning the goal king award after scoring three goals during the competition.
Participating players received MTN-branded souvenirs in recognition of their involvement.
16 Communities Battle for Glory
The three-week competition brought together 16 communities, providing a platform for football enthusiasts to support their teams while promoting grassroots football and strengthening relationships among residents.
Participating communities included Sunyani Newtown, Area One, Fiapre, Penkwasi and Abesim Koonum.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Bono Regional Manager of MTN, Mr Kofi Owusu, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the competition, describing the 2026 edition as a success with noticeable improvements over the previous year.
He said the growing enthusiasm and strong support from residents of the Sunyani Municipality demonstrated the increasing interest in the tournament.
Mr Owusu praised the participating teams for their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition, adding that MTN would work to address identified shortcomings to improve subsequent editions.
He reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting initiatives that unite communities and encourage positive social interaction.
The Chief Executive Officer of Suncity Group of Companies, Mr Ransford Antwi, also commended the teams and football supporters for their active participation throughout the programme.
Festival Combines Sports, Health and Entertainment
The Suncity Festival featured activities beyond football, including a health walk and free health screening exercise aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles among residents.
A music concert held on Saturday further added excitement to the celebrations, with popular Ghanaian artistes Fancy Gadam, Dope Nation and Kooko entertaining patrons.
The combination of football, health promotion and entertainment made the festival a major platform for community participation and social engagement.
With their impressive 2-0 victory over Baakoniaba, Odumase now has the honour of being crowned champions of the 2026 MTN Suncity Inter-Community Soccer Gala, taking home the top prize and celebrating a memorable achievement in Sunyani.
