The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has acknowledged reported losses under Ghana’s gold trading arrangements, urging a review of the system to improve accountability and prevent further losses.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, October 13, the Tamale South MP, however, said the debate over the losses should consider both the challenges and the benefits of the country’s gold trading system.
“We must all respond to the question: Can the Gold Board and the Bank of Ghana function in a manner that it does not occasion those losses?” he asked.
Mr Iddrisu challenged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge reported losses in 2023 and 2024, arguing that the issue should not be treated as a problem that emerged only under the current administration.
The minister said President John Dramani Mahama would consider objective recommendations aimed at improving GoldBod’s operations and performance.
“President Mahama will accommodate any objective suggestion from any Ghanaian group that thinks that this is the way to improve the gold performance,” he said.
The Minister further noted that the gold trading arrangements have contributed to higher foreign reserves, currency stability and lower interest-servicing costs.
Meanwhile, during his appearance at the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on the same day, the CEO of GoldBod Sammy Gyamfi, dismissed class of GHS22 billion losses incurred in 2025.
