The Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Gaming Commission of Ghana, Lamtiig A. Apanga, has defended the competence of newly appointed Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo, arguing that her alleged political affiliation should not affect her work.
He said Ms Agbenyo’s professional skills and experience should be considered in assessing her suitability for the position, despite concerns raised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over her alleged ties to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Apanga made the remarks on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Tuesday, October 13, following the swearing-in of Ms Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as the EC’s new Deputy Chairpersons on Monday, October 12.
“Even if Emilia is partisan, that assertion would not have any impact on the work of the Commission,” he said.
The controversy follows allegations by the NPP Communications Director, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, that Ms Agbenyo was an active NDC member who played a key role in the party’s 2024 election campaign.
He has questioned whether her political associations are compatible with the neutrality expected of an electoral management body.
Mr Apanga acknowledged that Ms Agbenyo had been associated with the NDC, including serving as a spokesperson for the party’s Manifesto Committee on Governance.
However, he questioned the NPP’s criticism, arguing that the party should also account for appointments made during its time in government.
He also defended Dr Asamoah, citing his previous experience within the EC and his professional background as evidence of his capacity to contribute to the Commission’s work.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, during the swearing-in ceremony, urged the two appointees to discharge their duties without fear or favour towards any political party or candidate.
