President John Dramani Mahama has called on the newly sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) to promote an inclusive electoral process that enables all eligible Ghanaians to participate freely in elections.
Addressing Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah at their swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, the President stressed the need for transparency, accountability and equal treatment of political parties and candidates.
He specifically highlighted Ms Agbenyo’s experience in promoting gender and disability inclusion, urging her to help ensure that electoral participation is accessible to all eligible voters.
President Mahama said the Commission must pay attention to the needs of persons who face physical, social or communication barriers that could prevent them from participating fully in the electoral process.
He encouraged the new Deputy Chairpersons to engage constructively with political parties, civil society organisations, the media and citizens to address concerns and strengthen public confidence in the Commission.
The President also urged them to provide accurate information whenever misinformation arises and to acknowledge and correct mistakes when necessary.
He maintained that the EC’s credibility depends on its ability to apply the law fairly and consistently, without allowing political interests to influence its decisions.
“As President, I expect no preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for myself, my party or my government. You must have the courage to uphold what is right even when it is inconvenient for those in power,” he said.
Dr Asamoah, who brings experience in law, accounting, economics and electoral administration, was also tasked with contributing to improvements in the training of electoral officers, internal systems and the management of public resources.
The two appointments follow recent changes in the EC’s senior leadership, including the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare and the retirement of former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
