When Hon. Benjamin Narteh Ayiku shattered the legendary "one-term jinx" of the Ledzokuku Constituency, many believed a new era of proactive representation had dawned for the people of Teshie. Breaking a decades-old political cycle was supposed to be a wake-up call for performance, not a license for complacency. Yet, look closely at our communities today. A dangerous, arrogant disconnect has set in. The humility of the 2024 campaign trail has vanished, replaced by an alarming bureaucratic silence while the people drown in dust, filth, and medical neglect.
Worse still, the very engine room that powered his historic victory—the Constituency Executive Committee—has been completely shut out. Today, the MP has become a phantom; all official calls, grievances, and emergency party matters are diverted to his brother, who now acts as an unelected gatekeeper. As the legendary king of proverbs, Hon. Alhassan Aba Fuseini, wisely observed, “If a man borrows a dress to attend a dance, he does not choose the music.” Hon. Ayiku must be reminded that he wears a borrowed garment belonging to the grassroots of Ledzokuku. If he continues to isolate himself behind family walls, he will have no one to blame when the music stops. The honeymoon is over, the clock is ticking, and the anger on the ground is reaching a boiling point.
Nowhere is this abandonment more visible and insulting than in Teshie Zongo and the surrounding Estates. It is time to call our MP to order before he brings a worthless, late-hour, house-to-house campaign to our doorsteps in 2028.
The Receipts of Neglect: Breaking Ranks with Teshie Zongo
A walk past our most recognizable community landmarks reveals a shocking picture of infrastructural decay and complete administrative failure:
- The Zongo Main Road and Estate Intersection Nightmare: The inner roads connecting key parts of Teshie Zongo to the main Estate roads have degenerated into a cratered, unmotorable disaster zone. Commercial drivers and Okada riders openly lament the severe damage to their vehicles, while residents are forced to swallow clouds of dust daily.
- The Death Traps Around Teshie Zongo Mosque: Right near the central Teshie Zongo Mosque, the drainage systems are completely broken down, shallow, or utterly non-existent. During downpours, this sacred area and the surrounding households face immediate flood risks because there are no modern concrete gutters to channel the stormwaters safely away.
- Stagnant Gutters and Health Hazards Near the Estate Market: The open gutters near the Estate Market and local schools are heavily choked with filth and silt, creating a permanent breeding ground for mosquitoes and emitting a foul stench. This isn't just an eyesore; it is a direct public health crisis that the MP has failed to address with permanent, structural solutions.
- Complete Healthcare Abandonment at the Grassroots: While grand speeches are made about distant clinics, the vulnerable, the elderly, and the impoverished within the Zongo and Estate enclaves are left entirely to their fate. There is an absolute lack of proactive, localized intervention—such as mobile health vans—to bring basic checkups directly to the doorsteps of those who cannot afford hospital bills.
- The Proxy Leadership Crisis: It is a dangerous political taboo to cut ties with the leadership that built your ladder. Dagomba wisdom teaches us that “A bird does not fly into the sky and forget that it must land on the ground.” By outsourcing constituency governance to his brother and rendering himself unreachable to his own Executive Committee, the MP is cutting off his own political oxygen.
Non-Negotiable Demands and Strategic Suggestions
The youth, elders, and party structures of Ledzokuku are no longer accepting excuses. Hon. Ayiku must look closely at the international warning from the great French statesman Charles de Gaulle, who noted: “I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.” The citizens of Teshie are taking matters into their own hands. If Hon. Benjamin Ayiku intends to avoid a catastrophic, humiliating defeat in 2028, he must immediately execute the following actions:
- Restore Direct Communication with the Executive Committee: Dismantle the family proxy system immediately. The MP must open direct, unfiltered lines of communication with his area executives to address pressing constituency issues without using his brother as a shield.
- Deploy the Common Fund to Teshie Zongo Roads Immediately: Stop passing the buck to the central government. The MP must immediately utilize his allocation to partner with local contractors to reshape, grade, and lay bitumen on the critical connector roads within the Zongo and Estate zones.
- Construct Modern, Interconnected Concrete Gutters: The MP's office must urgently launch a comprehensive drainage project starting from the flood-prone hotspots near the Zongo Mosque and the Estate Market, replacing shallow trenches with deep, covered concrete drains.
- Launch a Dedicated Mobile Health Van Scheme: Procure functional community health vans tasked with visiting Teshie Zongo and the Estates on a strict weekly schedule. These vans must provide free, house-to-house medical checks, vital screenings (blood pressure, diabetes), and basic care for our aged and disabled constituents.
Let this serve as an uncompromising final warning to Hon. Benjamin Ayiku. To whom much is given, much is expected. The Holy Scriptures remind us in Luke 12:48: “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.”
The people of Teshie Zongo and the Estates did not stand in long queues to elect a spectator, nor did they vote for an invisible man who speaks only through his brother. They voted for a fighter who would fix their broken roads, construct their gutters, and protect their health. If your strategy is to ignore these critical community landmarks for the next two years and then show up in 2028 with last-minute bags of rice and empty promises, save your energy. As another powerful proverb states: “The dog that barks at a shadow will never catch the thief.” Empty political gimmicks will no longer work. Your house-to-house campaign will be rejected outright at the boundary. Fix Ledzokuku now, or prepare to exit!
