The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that government is set to commence a comprehensive national audit into the Rural Telephony Project inherited from the previous administration.
According to the minister, the audit is to ensure that taxpayers get true value for money in the rural telephony projects.
"We are going to commence a national audit within the next few weeks on the entire project to ensure we are paying for the right thing," Hon. Sam George said.
He made this known in an interview with the media ahead of a two-day working visit to inspect rural telephony sites in the Ashanti Region, beginning Monday, October 13, 2026.
As part of the tour, the Minister will visit KNUST, Kwadaso Regional Information Centre, Asawase Community Information Centre, and Nkwantakese Community Information Centre.
On the second day, the minister will inspect some telephony sites including Nyameama Number One and Two, Dawia, and Abenua cell sites.
The minister, during the press briefing, said after receiving a report from the contractor on the state of completion, it called for inspection to get first-hand information from the various sites.
He expressed the government's commitment to ensure equal access to telephony services in rural areas.
For his part, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, appealed to the Communications Minister to also consider newly developing communities that need immediate telephony connections.
He added that his outfit has compiled data on communities that need support and will present it to the minister for consideration.
Dr. Amoakohene commended the Ministry of Communications for their efforts in ensuring communities get access to mobile networks.
