Newly appointed Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson in charge of Legal and Governance Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah has pledged to restore public confidence in the Commission, acknowledging that trust in the institution is at its lowest point in more than two decades.
He said his leadership would prioritise transparency, accountability and integrity while pursuing electoral reforms to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Dr Kwaku Asamoah made the commitment on Monday, October 12, during his swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House in Accra.
“Restoring your confidence in this Commission is therefore not an option. It is an obligation imposed on us, and we personally must be judged by that particular measure,” he said.
The new EC Deputy Chairperson said he was returning to an institution where he had served for several years in various capacities, including Director of Finance, election administrator, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.
He said his experience had given him an understanding of both the Commission’s strengths and its challenges, as well as the dedication of its staff.
Dr Asamoah assured Ghanaians that the Commission would pursue electoral policies and reforms based on national interest rather than partisan political considerations.
“That work will rest on zero tolerance for partisan political interest and 100% tolerance for national interest,” he said.
He also pledged to help review the Commission’s electoral processes in consultation with its staff and key stakeholders, with the aim of identifying areas for improvement.
He called on political parties, Parliament, the security services, civil society organisations, the judiciary, the media and citizens to support efforts to protect electoral integrity.
