The University of Ghana has postponed the reopening of the university for the 2026/2027 academic year following disruptions linked to the ongoing strike by university administrators.
The university was scheduled to reopen on Monday, October 12, but management says a new date will be announced later.
The postponement comes as the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) continues its industrial action over unresolved employment-related concerns.
In a notice dated Saturday, October 10, and signed by Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, the university informed students of the change.
“The Management of the University of Ghana wishes to inform all students that the reopening of the University for the 2026/2027 academic year, initially scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, has been postponed,” the notice stated in part.
Management apologised for the inconvenience and urged students to complete their online academic registration while awaiting the revised reopening date.
Students have also been reminded that registration is necessary to secure their places in classes and qualify for the upcoming random bed allocation exercise.
“In the meantime, students are reminded to complete their academic registration online using the procedure outlined in our previous communication,” the notice added.
GAUA began its nationwide strike on August 10, over concerns about conditions of service and disparities in employment-related benefits.
The association suspended the action after engagements with the Education Minister but resumed the strike on October 6 after negotiations failed to resolve its grievances.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has invited GAUA and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting on today, Monday, October 12, to seek an amicable resolution.
The outcome of the meeting could influence when affected universities resume normal academic and administrative activities.
