The Bono Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has facilitated the replacement and upgrading of 23 electricity transformers to improve power supply reliability and benefit 4,178 customers across the Bono Region.

The intervention, undertaken in collaboration with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), forms part of PURC’s broader regulatory efforts to enhance electricity service delivery, address consumer concerns and ensure that utility providers respond to the growing demand for reliable power supply.

In addition to the electricity infrastructure improvements, PURC facilitated utility billing adjustments totalling GH¢47,057.78 for consumers during the third quarter of 2026. Of this amount, GH¢5,132.27 related to NEDCo, while GH¢41,925.51 was attributed to Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

As part of a related revenue recovery exercise, GWL recovered GH¢164,249.82, reflecting the Commission’s continued efforts to promote fairness in consumer-provider relations while ensuring the recovery of legitimate revenues by utility companies.

23 Transformers Upgraded to Improve Electricity Supply

The transformer upgrades represent a significant improvement in electricity distribution capacity across several communities in the Bono Region. The interventions are expected to accommodate increasing electricity demand, reduce pressure on existing equipment and improve the reliability of power supply for the 4,178 customers served by the affected transformers.

Several transformers had their capacities doubled to meet growing demand.

The Kotokrom Cemetery Road Extension transformer, for instance, was upgraded from 50kVA to 100kVA, benefiting 163 customers. The Watchman transformer also increased in capacity from 100kVA to 200kVA, serving 326 customers.

At Asufufu Valley, transformer capacity was increased from 50kVA to 100kVA, benefiting 159 customers, while the Uncle Paul transformer was upgraded from 100kVA to 200kVA to serve 309 customers.

The Kassagyan transformer received a notable capacity upgrade, increasing from 200kVA to 315kVA and serving 359 customers.

Other communities benefiting from the transformer upgrades include Kwadwofobehu, Benu Nkwanta, Feeder Roads, Motia Park, Parkso Asuakwa, Jica, Kwasi Ntum, GRNMA Hotel, Adwinsah, Julius, Atwimamonaso, Nanketewa, Dormaa Akwamu Clinic, Wamanafo Sawmill, Kofiasua, Kukuom Yawbafi, Kokoaa and City Aroma.

The upgrades are expected to strengthen the electricity distribution network, improve its capacity to meet rising demand and enhance service reliability for consumers in the beneficiary communities.

118 Electricity Poles Replaced
Beyond the transformer upgrades, a total of 118 electricity poles were replaced as part of the broader infrastructure improvement exercise. These comprised 108 low-voltage (LV) poles and 10 high-tension (HT) poles.

The replacement of the poles is intended to improve the safety, stability and resilience of the electricity distribution network while minimising the risk of service disruptions associated with deteriorating infrastructure.

The interventions underscore PURC’s commitment to promoting consumer protection and improved utility service delivery through regulatory engagement with service providers. By facilitating infrastructure improvements and addressing billing-related concerns, the Commission continues to encourage accountability, operational efficiency and better service outcomes for consumers.

With 23 transformers upgraded and 118 electricity poles replaced, alongside billing adjustments of GH¢47,057.78 and GWL revenue recovery of GH¢164,249.82, the Bono Regional Office of PURC continues to play an important role in promoting reliable electricity supply, fair utility billing and improved service delivery across the region.
