Sanctioned Russian Ship PATRIA Returns to Douala, Raising Questions Over Its Cargo

Feature Article Sanctioned Russian Ship PATRIA Returns to Douala, Raising Questions Over Its Cargo
FRI, 09 OCT 2026

The Russian roll-on/roll-off vessel PATRIA has been anchored off Douala, Cameroon, since October 2, 2026, and was still there on October 7, according to AIS-based tracking. Neither its operator nor port authorities have disclosed what it carries.

The ship is sanctioned by the United States, Canada and Ukraine, and was previously linked to Russian military deliveries in West Africa.

The latest movements
After 68 days at anchor off Apapa, Lagos, from July 21, the PATRIA left on September 27 and reached Owendo, Gabon, around September 30. It stayed only about 25 hours there, far shorter than earlier calls, before heading to Douala. The route matches a pattern since spring: loading at Owendo, unloading at Douala, and offshore waits of days or weeks in between.

At least five such rotations have been recorded since April.

Bellingcat's satellite and AIS analysis found the ship shuttling between Douala and Owendo, and its owners, managers and both ports did not respond to questions about the cargo. Bellingcat's draft analysis shows the vessel sitting deeper after Owendo and shallower after Douala between March and July, which suggests loading and unloading. The draft for the latest Owendo call is not available in public sources, so the pattern cannot yet be confirmed.

The Lagos wait
According to available data, no other ro-ro or container vessel waited so long off Lagos during that period, despite port congestion. Possible explanations include repairs, financial difficulties or waiting for a charter. Experts also raised the possibility of an effort to reduce the vessel's visibility.

The Nigerian Ports Authority did not respond to questions. In March, the supply vessel JS Gratitude was photographed alongside the PATRIA, possibly for bunkering at anchorage.

The record
The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the PATRIA and another sanctioned ship, Baltic Leader, unloaded in Conakry, Guinea, in late May, according to AP satellite images.

European military officials said such cargo was then trucked overland to Mali. A later report by The Sentry found that the Conakry terminal involved is operated by Russian-Guinean companies that are subsidiaries of Rusal, and that deliveries there supported Russia's military operations in Mali.

According to The Insider's summary, dockworkers told The Sentry's analysts that the ships delivered armored vehicles, tanks, artillery, combat aircraft and electronic warfare equipment.

The ship then dropped off public AIS data for months. It reappeared in January 2026 at Olga, in Russia's Far East, before returning to West Africa and unloading part of its cargo in Douala in March.

Why Douala matters
Douala is a main gateway for goods bound for the landlocked Central African Republic, where Russia keeps a substantial military presence inherited from Wagner and now run by Africa Corps.
