Social activist and lead convener of the Democracy Hub pressure group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has described the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) two-thirds parliamentary majority as “very underwhelming”.
The NDC entered the Ninth Parliament after winning a commanding majority in the December 2024 parliamentary elections.
They currently hold 185 seats, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured 87 seats, and four independent MPs, all of whom, caucus with the NDC.
According to Barker-Vormawor, the party’s commanding majority in Parliament has not translated into major programmatic reforms, stronger parliamentary oversight or the effective use of Parliament’s powers to address social challenges.
He cautioned that the NDC could suffer significant losses in the 2028 parliamentary elections if its large majority does not begin to produce results that meet public expectations.
“I also believe that the 2/3’ds has been very underwhelming. We haven’t seen major programmatic reforms that have moved governance in any strategic direction,” Mr Barker-Vormawor said in a social media post on Thursday, October 8.
He said the NDC’s performance in Parliament had raised questions about whether the political left had a clear programme for governance after assuming power.
“We haven’t seen parliamentary oversight over the executive change in any dramatic fashion and we haven’t seen the power of Parliament utilised to address social issues facing the Ghanaian,” he said.
He attributed part of the situation to the departure of some experienced parliamentarians.
He noted that some of the “old titans” who contributed significantly to parliamentary debates had either left the House or joined the executive as ministers.

That is the NDC, slow but sure, not arrogant like the NPP.
