Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he describes as a series of decisions that could undermine the party’s electoral prospects.
According to him, the party appears to be making decisions in haste without adequately considering their implications, particularly following its recent national executive elections and other organisational decisions.
He cited the election of Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, as First National Vice Chairman, despite, in his view, being an ex-convict.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day programme on Wednesday, October 7, Bediako Baidoo said the NPP appeared to be repeatedly making decisions that could work against its own interests.
“The NPP keeps pressing the self-destruction button. It’s important. I state this, and I don’t know why they keep doing it. For whatever reason, they seem to be in a haste to do everything, anyhow," he said.
The Akwatia MP also questioned why the NPP elected its flagbearer several months ahead of the 2028 general election, arguing that there had been little visible activity from the candidate since his election.
He further criticised the party over the controversy surrounding former Acting Chairman Smith Buttey’s opposition to the decision to make its flagbearer the leader.
The National Democratic Congress lawmaker said the concerns raised by Mr Buttey should not be dismissed, particularly because he was the chairman under whose leadership the conference was organised.
He also challenged the NPP’s reported plans to identify or select parliamentary candidates in constituencies where it considers its current candidates unsuitable.
According to him, such a move could conflict with the NPP’s own constitution, which, he said, requires candidates to go through an electoral process.
“If they try anything in terms of selection rather than election, it will be unconstitutional, and their own people can take them on," the MP, who is also a lawyer, said.
