The legal team of businessman and former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is yet to receive official confirmation on whether he is among the 863 convicted persons pardoned by President John Dramani Mahama.
Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, spokesperson for Mr Boasiako, said the team was awaiting formal communication from the relevant authorities before drawing any conclusions about his status.
President Mahama announced the pardon as part of a special exercise covering 863 convicted persons across the country, prompting questions about whether some high-profile individuals whose cases are before the courts were included.
According to Dr Boakye Danquah, no official communication has been received indicating that Chairman Wontumi is among those covered by the President’s decision.
He said the team would therefore wait for the authorities to provide details on the names and categories of persons affected by the pardon.
“We don’t have the fine details yet and so if we are yet to be communicated to, we will let the public know. Our prayer and consideration will be that if we would have our name anywhere at all, it would be within the Special Recommendation or Petition category.”
Dr Boakye Danquah said the team’s immediate focus was to secure bail for Chairman Wontumi on October 15, pending the determination of his appeal.
He expressed optimism that the appeal would succeed and that the court would also grant the application for bail pending the outcome of the legal process.
“We are just praying that the appeal goes through and also we are praying that the bail pending the appeal goes through.”
