A dispute that has played out for weeks through press statements and posts on X is now a federal case. A US firm has sued Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian government, former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode and the US lobbying firm DCI Group for $57 million.
The suit was filed on September 28, 2026 in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, according to the firm's own announcement, and is listed as Von Batten v. Tinubu et al., Case No. 1:2026cv03374.
The plaintiff side is led by Karl Von Batten, who heads the Washington lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York. He alleges defamation and a conspiracy to kidnap and physically harm him. The reported damages are $36 million from Tinubu and the Nigerian government, $3 million from Fani-Kayode and $18 million from DCI Group.
DW Africa reports that court records show summonses have been issued to the defendants. The firm said it initially kept the filing private while arranging service on the foreign defendants under US rules.
All of this is allegation. None of the claims has been proven in court, and the defendants have yet to answer them in a courtroom.
Fani-Kayode, now Nigeria's ambassador to South Africa, has rejected the allegations and challenged Von Batten to publish any evidence of threats against him, Tinubu or the government. He has threatened a counter-suit of at least $100 million and an extradition bid under Nigeria's cybercrime law.
The background is political. Von Batten's firm is registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act as working for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu's leading rival ahead of 2027, on a reported $1.2 million, 12-month contract. It has pressed in the US for the release of FBI and DEA records tied to a 1993 civil forfeiture of $460,000 linked to Tinubu.
That case was a civil proceeding against the money. Tinubu was never criminally charged, and his lawyers have consistently denied wrongdoing. The Tinubu administration, for its part, has reportedly hired DCI Group at $750,000 a month, potentially reaching $9 million.
The legal road will be steep. The firm itself acknowledges that its claims against a sitting head of state and the federal government face hurdles under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. Courts will have to decide questions of jurisdiction, service and immunity before they reach the merits, and a claim of conspiracy to kidnap will need hard evidence to survive.
The case matters beyond its figures. Both camps are paying for influence in Washington, and Nigerians have a right to know what is being bought, by whom and with what money. A government spending public funds on image management in the US should account for it, just as an opposition candidate should disclose who finances his campaign abroad.
And if there is any evidence of threats against a person on American soil, it belongs before a court and law enforcement, not in a social media thread.
Whatever the verdict, the dispute shows how Nigeria's 2027 contest is already being fought in foreign capitals through lobbyists, filings and lawsuits.
