President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has held high-level consultations with officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., as part of efforts to deepen cooperation and mobilise support for the region’s development agenda.
The engagement took place on September 28 and 29, 2026, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
General Diop visited the headquarters of the Bretton Woods Institutions in Washington, D.C., where he met Professor Ouattara Wautabouna, Executive Director for the IMF West Africa Constituency, and Zeine Zeidane, Director of the IMF African Department.
The visit formed part of efforts by the ECOWAS Commission to strengthen strategic engagement with key international financial institutions.
General Diop was accompanied by ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Francess Alghali; Director of External Relations, Jerome Boa; and Director of Political Affairs, Babatunde Afolabi.
Also on the delegation were ECOWAS representatives to the United Nations, including Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai, Head of the ECOWAS Representation to the UN, and Esther Daramola, Political Adviser.
