The opposition NPP's newly elected national leadership must rebuild unity and reconnect with the party's grassroots if it is to position the party for the 2028 elections, political scientist Dr Kwasi Amakye-Boateng has said.
According to him, the outcome of the party's National Delegates Conference must be assessed against the internal challenges thast have confronted the NPP since its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“The party is breaking apart,” Dr Amakye-Boateng said, arguing that the new leadership must find ways to bring back members who have left the party and address divisions within its ranks.
He said while the delegates' decisions must be respected, the new leadership must demonstrate that the structure created at the conference can help achieve and sustain unity.
“They go out, you know, to build a structure that will really, in the first place, create opportunity for this unity to be achieved and sustained,” he said.
Dr Amakye-Boateng said reconnecting with the party's grassroots would also be critical, pointing to its performance in the Ashanti Region, traditionally one of its strongholds.
“The last time around, obviously they lost touch with the rank and file, and that possibly provides one of the explanations for the abysmal performance in their stronghold here in the Ashanti Region,” he said.
He said the new leadership should learn from the party's recent experience and change how it engages its members and the wider electorate.
Dr Amakye-Boateng said the new executives should be given the benefit of the doubt but stressed that rebuilding the party would require more than simply electing new leaders.
The NPP held its National Delegates Conference over the weekend, electing a new national executive team to lead the party as it seeks to rebuild after its 2024 electoral defeat.
