Former Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joseph Danquah Smith Buttey, has taken a swipe at Anthony Abayifaa Karbo over what he describes as the former National Elections Committee member’s defiance of his directive during the party’s recent national conference.
Mr Buttey said he had no personal problem with Karbo but questioned his authority to disregard an instruction from the Acting National Chairman.
“Who is Karbo to defy my orders?” Buttey said in an interview on Ezra TV/FM.
Buttey had called for the proposed constitutional amendments to be deferred to the next national conference, arguing that the party did not have enough time to properly consider the proposals while also conducting the elections.
Despite his position, the constitutional review went ahead at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, with delegates eventually approving all 14 proposed amendments.
One of the major changes approved makes the party’s elected flagbearer its leader. The amendment reversed the provision introduced earlier in 2026 which had made the National Chairman the party leader.
Buttey has rejected the amendments, particularly the change to the party’s leadership structure, and maintains that the party should have respected his directive to postpone the exercise.
He said his disagreement with Karbo was not personal but centred on the decision to defy his authority.
According to Buttey, he only wanted what was best for the NPP and believed postponing the amendments would have given delegates adequate time to consider them.
With his tenure as Acting National Chairman now over, Buttey said he is leaving the position with a clear conscience.
“I only want the best for the party. Now that I have finished with my mandate, I am going with a clean head,” he said.
