Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has described the election of Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, as First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “backward politics”.

Kojo Bamba emerged First Vice Chairman after topping the NPP’s vice-chairmanship contest with 3,116 votes at the party’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3.

He contested the position against 12 other aspirants, including Henry Nana Boakye, Nana Akomea and former Health Minister Mustapha Hamid.

Nana B became Second Vice Chairman with 3,061 votes, while Nana Akomea secured the Third Vice Chairman position.

Reacting to this on Accra-based JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, October 5, Gbande criticised the decision to elect Mr Boadu.

He argued that his association with political vigilantism makes his elevation inconsistent with Ghana’s democratic progress.

“To go and elect Kojo Bamba and projecting the mindset of violence, for me is backward politics,” he said.

“The NDC have bypassed that in 2016. We promised that we were going to win the election, and we also promised that it was going to be a violence-free election,” he added.

Kojo Bamba rose to prominence as a leader of the Delta Force, a pro-NPP vigilante group that became prominent in the Ashanti Region following the NPP’s return to power in 2017.

The group was involved in a violent incident at the Kumasi Regional Coordinating Council over the appointment of George Adjei as Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator.

Whether Kojo Bamba's election projects a mindset of violence or not, the government must be prepared and even start preparing now to deal with the situation when it erupts. The NPP is aware of the position they are in and therefore ready to cause violence. That is what the party is known for, right from Nkrumah's time. Who has the power to curb violence? It's the NDC government, so the preparation should start now. Recently, an article I read on ModernGhana is calling on Richard Japka not to...
