In a major boost to access to safe and sustainable water in Ghana, Markaz Aleawn Alyaqin Humanitarian Services (MAA) and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) have signed a Joint Implementation Programme (JIP) for the construction of 20 solar-powered boreholes across five regions of Ghana.
The landmark agreement, signed at the KSrelief headquarters in Riyadh, will be implemented over eight months and is expected to directly benefit an estimated 76,565 people in schools and communities.
The initiative represents a significant investment in sustainable water infrastructure, particularly for communities and educational institutions where reliable access to safe water remains essential for drinking, sanitation, hygiene and other daily needs.
20 Solar-Powered Boreholes to Transform Communities
Under the programme, each beneficiary facility will be equipped with a solar-powered borehole, a 10-cubic-metre water storage tank and six water taps.
The facilities are expected to provide a dependable source of clean water while reducing reliance on conventional power sources and supporting long-term sustainability.
Among the beneficiary institutions are Asawase M/A Cluster of Schools, Sepe Cluster of Schools, Akrom Cluster of Schools, Garden City Special School, Sakafia Islamic Senior High School, Parkoso Senior High School, Kumasi Academy, New Konkrompe Senior High School and the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).
Several communities will also benefit, including Techimantia, Vea, Bongo Gurigo, Kudorogo, Kofiase, Bepoase, Sawua, Kokoado, Homabenase, Badaase and Aboabo No. 1–4, among others.
The intervention is expected to strengthen access to water for pupils, students, households and residents while contributing to improved sanitation and hygiene standards.
Strengthening Saudi Arabia-Ghana Humanitarian Cooperation
The project forms part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing humanitarian and relief efforts through KSrelief, which support vulnerable communities in different parts of the world.
Beyond providing immediate relief, the solar-powered borehole project is designed as a sustainable intervention capable of improving living conditions and supporting community development over the long term.
MAA expressed its profound appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for their continued commitment to humanitarian and relief initiatives worldwide.
The organisation also commended Dr. Abdullah A. Al-Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief, and Eng. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Baiz, Assistant Supervisor General for Operations and Programs, for their continued dedication to humanitarian service and cooperation.
The partnership underscores the growing importance of international humanitarian cooperation in addressing fundamental needs such as access to clean water.
For thousands of Ghanaians who stand to benefit, the 20 solar-powered boreholes could represent more than water infrastructure; they could mean healthier schools, improved sanitation, greater dignity and a more sustainable future for communities.
MAA concluded by praying for continued peace, security, prosperity and success for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and for divine blessings upon its leadership and all those contributing to humanitarian service around the world.
