Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is meant to be a rite of passage, but young graduates travelling to orientation camps are now being seized on the country's highways. Gunmen abducted 20 corps members along the Owerri–Onitsha Road near Umunoha community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The corps members were reportedly travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom States when gunmen intercepted the two vehicles carrying them.Police said operatives were combing the surrounding bushes while a Rapid Response Team tracked the kidnappers.
The attack follows an earlier one. Weeks before, police said 11 people, including some corps members, were rescued after gunmen attacked vehicles along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Kogi State.
Reports described a growing pattern of attacks on travellers and corps members on major highways. The rescue is the release most closely tied to this pattern. The Imo victims were not freed, and as of 5 October, the 20 prospective corps members were reportedly still in captivity.
Pressure on the captives has grown. The kidnappers reportedly cut their ransom demand from ₦50 million to ₦5 million per victim, reducing the total from ₦1 billion to ₦100 million. At the official rate of about ₦1,327 to the dollar, the naira traded at ₦1,327.08 on 5 October, so the per-victim demand fell from about $37,700 to about $3,770, and the total from about $753,500 to about $75,400.
Vanguard reported that the victims, including the women, were being beaten as a payment deadline approached. The case has sparked wider anger. One critic argued that an abduction on this scale suggests someone supplied information to the kidnappers.
On social media, one user complained that NYSC officials had said nothing about the abduction and argued that serving the country had become a threat to life.
A campaign council backing Governor Seyi Makinde's 2027 presidential bid called on President Bola Tinubu to act and rescue the victims.
The security lesson is direct. NYSC movement is predictable: batches travel on set dates, along known routes, to known camps. A mandatory programme that sends young people onto some of the country's most dangerous roads carries a duty of care.
Options include escorts or convoys for camp-bound travel, staggered movement, and clearer public communication from the NYSC Directorate. The police said they are coordinating with the NYSC Directorate to reach families and provide updates.
The authorities now face two tests: bringing the 20 home safely, and showing that corps members can serve without being exposed to kidnappers.
