Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere, says the perception that Boakye Agyarko was opposed to former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia may have influenced John Boadu’s victory in the party’s national chairmanship election.

According to Dr Asante Otchere, the narrative surrounding Mr Agyarko’s relationship with Dr Bawumia was one of the factors that needed to be considered in analysing the outcome of the contest.

“It was part of the narrative that Boakye Agyarko was anti-Bawumia,” he said.

Speaking on Citi FM, Dr Asante Otchere said the development was significant given that earlier polling had placed Mr Boadu ahead of Mr Agyarko ahead of the election.

He said this raised questions about what ultimately shaped the delegates’ decision and whether the considerations that influenced their earlier rejection of Mr Boadu had changed.

Dr Asante Otchere recalled that Mr Boadu had previously been unsuccessful in his bid for the position of General Secretary four years ago, but subsequently secured the chairmanship.

He argued that the outcome therefore required an examination of the factors that informed the delegates’ latest choice, particularly the narrative surrounding Mr Agyarko.

“Since those factors have not changed, for me, it was a wrong decision on the part of the delegates to elect John Boadu,” he said.
