New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has pledged to stand by every member of the party if elected.
The party is set to hold its National Delegates' Conference at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, October 3, to elect new national executives.
Boakye Agyarko, who previously served as Energy Minister, faces John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, and Paul Afoko, in the National Chairman race.
“The NPP I seek to lead will stand by every member who faces adversity, with legal support, with our presence and with principle," he assured in a statement issued on Friday, while reacting to the arrest and detention of Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffuor Awuah by EOCO.
The MP voluntarily reported himself to EOCO on Thursday, October 1, accompanied by his lawyers, after the High Court issued a warrant for his arrest.
He was subsequently arrested and detained for further interrogation and remains in custody as at the time of filing this report.
He is being investigated over alleged conspiracy, financial loss, money laundering and tax offences.
Boakye Agyarko said the opposition party is not seeking special treatment for its members but wanted the constitutional rights of every Ghanaian to be respected.
He also criticised what he described as the continued detention of Baffour Awuah, arguing that his voluntary appearance before EOCO should be considered in determining whether he poses a flight risk.
He called on EOCO to release the MP on bail and continue its investigations while allowing him to remain a free man.
