Disaster Over 5,000 displaced,412 houses affected in Hohoe as MP appeals for more support
FRI, 02 OCT 2026

Flooding in the Hohoe Municipality has displaced about 5,140 residents and affected 412 houses across 11 communities, according to preliminary data from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Some buildings and other structures were completely destroyed by the floodwaters, with Hohoe Zongo among the hardest-hit communities.

The figures were released in a public update by the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Mr Tsekpo said the relief received so far falls short of what is needed and called for urgent assistance.

"Given the scale of the disaster, however, the assistance received so far remains insufficient, and additional support is urgently required," he said.

Security agencies and emergency teams have been deployed to evacuate residents from high-risk areas and relocate those displaced. Some victims are being housed in classrooms and other available facilities, while the Social Welfare Department and other stakeholders search for more temporary shelter.

Relief items, including mattresses, blankets, rice, tinned fish, cooking oil and other household essentials, have been donated by the MP's office, the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, NADMO, individuals and organisations. The first round of distribution has reached Gbi Kledjo, Atabu, Kpoeta and parts of Hohoe Zongo, with other communities to follow based on verified NADMO data.

A Relief Distribution Committee made up of Assembly Members and other stakeholders has been set up to ensure items are shared according to the verified needs of affected households.

Health officials are also working in the communities to prevent disease outbreaks, educating residents on safe drinking water, food hygiene, waste disposal, personal hygiene and waterborne diseases. A health screening exercise is planned across the affected areas.

Although floodwaters have begun to recede in some places and some residents are returning home, people have been warned not to re-enter buildings that have not been assessed and declared safe. Mr Tsekpo urged residents to follow the guidance of the authorities and put their safety first.

"The situation remains urgent," he said. "We therefore appeal to individuals, businesses, organisations, development partners, civil society organisations and benevolent institutions to support the people of Hohoe with relief items, financial assistance and other forms of support."

He said his office was working with the Municipal Assembly, NADMO, security agencies, health authorities, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to support residents through the emergency response, recovery and reconstruction.
