The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties.
The MP voluntarily reported to EOCO's offices at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to assist with an ongoing investigation. His appearance followed an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court, after EOCO told the court that earlier efforts to secure his attendance for questioning had been unsuccessful.
The investigation covers allegations including criminal conspiracy, causing financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among others.
Mr Baffour Awuah has denied receiving an alleged GH¢2.2 million in legal fees and has disputed parts of EOCO's account of its previous attempts to secure his attendance.
EOCO has stressed that the investigation is still ongoing and has urged the public not to draw conclusions about anyone's culpability before the investigative and judicial processes are complete.
Meanwhile, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has challenged EOCO to step up efforts to identify and prosecute the financiers and organisers behind Ghana-linked drug trafficking networks.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, the Effutu MP accused the agency of focusing unduly on arresting and investigating opposition figures while, in his view, failing to show the same urgency in tackling major narcotics networks. He urged EOCO to widen its investigations to target those who fund and organise drug trafficking operations.
His comments come amid growing public attention on Ghana-linked narcotics cases and EOCO's ongoing work on various economic and organised crime allegations.
The investigation involving Mr Baffour Awuah continues.
