President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed the Mercy Ships team back to Ghana for its fifth mission since 1991, highlighting the organisation’s contribution to healthcare delivery and the treatment of patients with complex medical conditions.
In a Facebook post following his tour of the Global Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, docked at Tema Port, Mahama said he was deeply moved by his interactions with Ghanaians receiving life-changing treatments.
He noted that some of the patients, including children with orthopaedic conditions, had waited for years to access the medical care they needed.
According to the President, the ship’s 10-month mission in Ghana will provide direct patient care while also training local health workers alongside an international medical team.
Mahama praised the medical crew, volunteers, donors, local partners and other supporters for their dedication to the humanitarian initiative.
He described Mercy Ships as a symbol of compassion and humanism at a time when self-interest increasingly shapes the actions of individuals and countries.
The President expressed confidence that the organisation’s partnership with Ghana would continue beyond the current mission.
“As I told them today, this is not the first time they have been here, and it will certainly not be the last,” he stated.
Mahama also expressed gratitude to the Global Mercy crew for their service to Ghana and the patients benefiting from the medical mission.
