Ghana’s legal profession must not be divided by politics – Bobby Banson

Founding Partner of Robert Smith Law Group, Bobby Banson, has called for unity in Ghana's legal profession amid the emergence of a second professional body representing lawyers in Ghana.

His comments come as the Ghana Law Society, a seeming rival body of the already existing Ghana Bar Association, holds its maiden Annual Bar Conference in Accra on Wednesday, September 30.

Reacting to the development in a social media post on Wednesday, Mr. Banson said the division within the legal profession could make the regulation of lawyers more difficult.

“The Media, parliament and executive are divided on political lines. Now the Bar is also split on political lines. Can’t the leaders of the two Bars meet to unite for a common cause?” he wrote.

“Without a united Bar, regulating the profession will be challenging. Let not Politics divide us,” he added.

The Ghana Law Society’s maiden conference is being held under the theme, “Legal Reforms: The Place of the Ghanaian Lawyer.”

It is expected to provide a platform for lawyers, judges, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss legal reforms and the role of lawyers in Ghana’s justice system.

The conference follows the Ghana Bar Association’s 2026/2027 Annual General Conference, which was held at the Aqua Safari Resort in Ada from September 13 to September 18.

The GBA conference focused on the evolution of Ghana’s legal profession over 150 years and the need for the profession to adapt to technological, commercial and other changes.
