Africa Corps in Mali: Symbols That Demand Accountability

Runic marks on a Russian armoured vehicle. A name borrowed from Rommel's desert army. Malian officers complaining of open racism. Moscow's soldiers in Mali owe Africans an explanation, and Bamako should be the first to demand one.

In late September, an image began circulating online of a vehicle that JNIM, al-Qaeda's Sahel branch, says it seized from a Russian Africa Corps patrol in the Ségou region. Painted on the armour beside the tactical number are runic characters, some resembling signs the Nazis turned into badges of racial terror. JNIM has claimed similar seizures before, and Africa Corps was ambushed near Diabaly in January 2026.

We cannot independently confirm where or when this vehicle was taken, or who painted the markings. The image comes from a group that kills Malian soldiers and civilians and wants to humiliate Moscow. But it fits a pattern that deserves answers, not silence.

From a sun sign to the badge of the SS
The markings appear to include the Sowilo (Sig) rune, which began as a sun symbol. The occultist Guido von List reinterpreted it as a "victory" sign, and two of them side by side became the emblem of the SS.

The Tiwaz (Tyr) rune, which also seems to appear, was favoured by the Nazi regime and is popular among white supremacists today.A rune alone proves nothing, since neo-pagans use them too. So context matters.

A Wagner inheritance
Wagner announced its departure from Mali in June 2025 and largely handed operations to the Kremlin-controlled Africa Corps.A Timbuktu Institute report put former Wagner men at up to 80 per cent of Africa Corps.

Wagner's record with Nazi imagery is well documented. Its commander, Dmitry Utkin, was photographed with SS symbols tattooed on his neck.[6] In the Central African Republic, Wagner fighters wore chevrons combining the Sig, Tiwaz and Thurisaz runes.Task Force Rusich, closely aligned with Wagner, is a neo-Nazi paramilitary group.

A name borrowed from Rommel
"Africa Corps" echoes the Afrikakorps that Hitler sent to North Africa in 1941. Moscow has never explained the choice. Deliberate or careless, Mali has entrusted part of its security to a force whose name, and some of whose members' symbols, borrow from a regime that ranked Africans at the bottom of its racial hierarchy.

Racism is not only a matter of symbols
The Sentry reported that Malian officers accused Russian fighters of commandeering their vehicles, ignoring the chain of command, and treating them with open racism.

Africans already paid for these symbols with their blood

In June 1940, German troops massacred African prisoners of war in France. At Chasselay, near Lyon, on 20 June, about 59 men remained when the 25th Senegalese Tirailleurs surrendered, and 48 tirailleurs were executed.[9] On the same day, 27 more were shot at Vaise.

Who did it is debated. Historian Julien Fargettas attributes Chasselay to the Wehrmacht's 10th Panzer Division, not the SS, while other accounts also name SS and Großdeutschland elements.[10] Today 188 tirailleurs rest in the Tata of Chasselay.

Even the lies were racist. On 17 June 1940 in Chartres, German officers demanded that the prefect sign a false statement blaming tirailleurs for civilian deaths caused by German bombing. He refused, was beaten, and tried to cut his own throat with broken glass rather than sign. He survived. His name was Jean Moulin.

What must happen now
Mali pays dearly for this partnership. JNIM's attack on the Dioura camp on 10 September killed at least 100 Malian soldiers and five Africa Corps personnel.

Africa Corps should say publicly whether these markings are tolerated in its ranks. The transitional authorities, who speak so often of sovereignty and dignity, should demand that answer. And the African Union, whose members honour the tirailleurs each year, should not look away.

Exposing these symbols does not make JNIM any less of a threat. But a country fighting for its survival should not have to choose between jihadists and partners who parade the insignia of those who massacred its grandfathers.
