Philippines to open first-ever embassy in Ghana

The Philippines will open an embassy in Ghana later this year, the first in the history of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development after meeting the Philippines' Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Ablakwa Commends Philippine Government

Mr Ablakwa commended the government of the Philippines for the decision, which marks a major step in Ghana-Philippines bilateral relations.

Deal to Deepen Trade and Investment

The minister said both countries had agreed to deepen trade and investment ties between them. As part of this, they will convene business fora in Ghana and the Philippines and establish a joint chamber of commerce to support businesses in both countries.

Cooperation on Labour Mobility

Mr Ablakwa added that Ghana and the Philippines had also agreed to share ideas and expertise on labour mobility agreements.

Part of Ghana's Wider Diplomatic Push

The meeting forms part of Ghana's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and expand economic cooperation with partner countries.
