Those behind EOCO ‘abuses’ will be held accountable

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, has condemned the manner in which officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to arrest Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffuor Awuah.

His comments follow a confrontation between the lawmaker and officials believed to be from EOCO on Wednesday, September 23, shortly after a bail hearing involving detained nurse Salomey Awiti Bafoh.

Videos seen by ModernGhana News show a woman believed to be an EOCO official approaching the lawmaker after he had left the courtroom and asking him to accompany her to the EOCO office.

The Manhyia South MP, who is also representing Bafoh as her lawyer, subsequently drove away from the court premises.

Reacting to the incident in a social media post on the same day, Sammi Awuku described the development as troubling and cautioned that public officials involved in such actions to consider the possible consequences of their conduct.

“We continue to experience and endure very strange and troubling times. But someday, and hopefully very soon, those responsible for these abuses will be called to account,” he said.

The Akuapem North MP also urged persons working in state institutions not to allow themselves to be used to intimidate or harass political opponents.

He stressed that public officials must remain conscious of their responsibility to the state and the potential consequences of actions taken in the discharge of their duties.

He further noted that the Minority Caucus will keep on with their role in keeping the government in check and will not allow themselves to be intimidated.

“Another sad day for our democracy. But we soldier on. We will not be intimidated, and we will not be silenced,” Sammi Awuku added.
