Speaker Bagbin summons Parliament for September 29 sitting

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has summoned Parliament to sit on Tuesday, September 29.

The notice, dated Thursday, September 24, invokes Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament.

In the notice, Speaker Bagbin directed that the House sit at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 29, at Parliament House in Accra.

The notice does not state the specific business for which Parliament has been summoned.

However, it follows a petition led by the First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu, requesting an extraordinary sitting to investigate a series of major narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.

The Minority said it had secured more than the constitutionally required 15 per cent of MPs to trigger the process under Article 112(3).

Among the issues the Minority wants investigated is the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French authorities at the Port of Dunkirk on September 10, 2026.

The caucus has said the development raises questions about Ghana's port security, customs controls, intelligence gathering and the country's efforts to combat organised crime.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee, had said the Minority expected the Speaker to issue a notice for an emergency sitting after the petition and accompanying documents were submitted.

The Majority, however, questioned the need for the recall, arguing that the government has already initiated measures to investigate the narcotics seizures.
