Mobile money transactions hit GH¢518.8bn in August

The value of mobile money transactions in Ghana climbed to GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026, reflecting the continued expansion of digital payments and the increasing use of mobile money services for financial transactions.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data, the value of transactions processed through mobile money platforms rose from GH¢354.1 billion in August 2025 to GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026.

The latest figure represents a year-on-year increase of about 46.5%.

Mobile money transaction values also increased on a monthly basis, rising from GH¢509.4 billion in July to GH¢518.8 billion in August.

The number of transactions recorded during the month was also significant. The Bank of Ghana reported 1.046 billion mobile money transactions in August, compared with 969 million in July.

The growth in activity coincided with an expansion in the mobile money customer and agent network.

By August 2026, the country had 85.8 million registered mobile money accounts, of which 26.4 million were active.

The number of active mobile money agents also rose from 550,000 in July to 594,000 in August, increasing the network available to customers seeking mobile financial services.

Meanwhile, the mobile money float balance increased slightly to GH¢39.8 billion in August from GH¢39 billion in July.

The latest figures highlight the scale of mobile money usage in Ghana, with the platforms continuing to serve as an important channel for payments and transfers by individuals and businesses.

The Bank of Ghana defines active mobile money accounts as those that recorded at least one transaction within the 90 days preceding the reporting period. Active agents, meanwhile, are those who conducted at least one transaction within the 30 days preceding the reporting period.
