We'll take action against two individuals who helped Manhyia South MP escape arrest – EOCO

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has identified two individuals who allegedly intervened to help Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, escape arrest on Wednesday, September 23.

The development follows an attempted arrest of the lawmaker by EOCO officers in connection with an ongoing investigation.

According to the anti-graft agency, the conduct of the two individuals is being assessed and it will take appropriate lawful steps based on its findings.

“EOCO has also identified two persons who, based on the circumstances captured on video, are alleged to have actively intervened to facilitate the escape of the MP. The conduct of these individuals is being assessed and the Office will take such lawful steps as may be appropriate,” EOCO said in a statement issued on the same day.

EOCO said its officers attempted to arrest Baffour Awuah as part of efforts to secure his attendance in the investigation after he allegedly failed to honour two invitations extended to him in February 2026.

The Office said the arrest was not successfully completed after the situation escalated, adding that its officers assessed that further action could have endangered public safety.

EOCO also noted that Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.

The agency said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations within the Constitution and applicable laws.

“Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law. At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the MP speaking at a press conference shortly after the development, explained that he decided to drive away from the scene in his attempt to protect himself from what he described as an attempted kidnap.
