A confrontation between security personnel and lawyers representing detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti caused a stir at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23.
This followed an attempt to arrest her lawyer, Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The incident followed proceedings on a bail application filed for Ms Baffoe Awiti, who has been remanded for two weeks in connection with investigations into the activities of the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
Reports gathered by ModernGhana News indicate that the security personnel involved are believed to be officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
A video circulating online captures a woman believed to be a security officer in a verbal exchange with the lawmaker who insists EOCO must write to the Speaker of Parliament.
Shortly after, the lawmaker heads into his vehicle during which the woman attempted to block.
The exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear, including whether the security personnel were EOCO officials and whether their presence at the court was connected to an attempt to arrest the MP.
The MP is representing Ms Baffoe Awiti in the case, which stems from her alleged links to Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof”.
Police allege that Ms Baffoe Awiti helped facilitate the circulation of content associated with the account.
The High Court hearing on Wednesday was specifically for Ms Baffoe Awiti’s bail application, which was filed after the Adenta Circuit Court remanded her for two weeks.
The hearing of the bail application has been adjourned to Thursday, September 24.
Meanwhile, reports gathered indicate that the Minority in Parliament is preparing to address the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
