The need to equip young people with practical skills that can help them become self-reliant has led the High Lady Beautician School in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional Capital, to open its doors to young women interested in the beauty industry.

The school provides training in areas such as hair braiding, wig making, weave-on, make-up and other aspects of beauty and personal care.

Founder of the school, Ms Dorothy Bonsu, said the initiative was established as part of her contribution towards addressing youth unemployment and creating opportunities for young people to develop skills they can use to earn a living.

She said there was a need for individuals and private organisations to complement government’s efforts by providing practical training opportunities for young people.

“We cannot rely on the government for everything. That is why I came up with the High Lady Beautician School to help, nurture and teach those interested in the beautician sector,” she said.

Ms Bonsu explained that her focus was not only on teaching the technical aspects of the beauty trade but also on helping young women acquire skills that could enable them to establish their own businesses.

She noted that learning a trade could provide young people with an alternative means of earning a living, particularly at a time when many are finding it difficult to secure formal employment.

According to her, a young woman who acquires the necessary skills in the beauty industry can start on a small scale and gradually build a business, while also creating opportunities for others.

Ms Bonsu said she would continue to encourage young women who have an interest in the beauty sector to take advantage of skills training and develop themselves.

She further noted that when more young people become self-reliant through skills development, it could help reduce some of the pressure on government to provide employment for everyone.

“At the end of the day, the government will get some relief so it can also focus on other areas such as development, roads and other important projects,” she added.

She stressed that tackling unemployment should not be left to government alone, saying individuals, businesses and other organisations all have a role to play in providing young people with opportunities to develop practical skills.

The latest admissions at the High Lady Beautician School are therefore expected to provide another opportunity for young women in Goaso and surrounding communities to acquire skills in the beauty and personal care sector.
