Transport fares increased 8% from September 26

Transport fares across Ghana are expected to increase by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following an agreement reached between the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport.

The decision brings an end to weeks of discussions over a proposed fare adjustment after the GPRTU initially demanded a 30% increase to offset rising operational expenses.

The union’s Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said the GPRTU settled on the 8% adjustment after the government assured transport operators that efforts were underway to secure further reductions in fuel prices.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, September 22, Mr Amoah said the union had been pushing for an increase of at least 25% but accepted the lower adjustment following negotiations with the ministry.

He said transport operators were currently operating at a loss but agreed to the 8% increase based on expectations that fuel prices would decline in the next pricing window.

According to him, the union also considered the potential impact of higher transport fares on passengers and the broader economy before accepting the government’s assurance.

Mr Amoah, however, warned that the union would return to the Ministry of Transport if the anticipated reduction in fuel prices failed to materialise.

“It's a promise given to us and if it fails, we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise given to us has not been fulfilled. Then we will see what will help our operations,” he said.
