Police arrest five, seize pistols, narcotics and over GH¢20,000 in Tamale operation 

The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects and recovered firearms, ammunition, suspected narcotics and cash in a targeted operation at Aboabo in the Tamale Metropolis.

The operation was conducted on Monday, September 21, by the Command’s Special Operations team, known as RED MARIA, as part of efforts to clamp down on drug peddling, drug use and other criminal activities.

The suspects have been identified as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohammed John, 28; Mohammed Nawas, 25; Mohammed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.

“The Northern Regional Command, through the Special Operations team, popularly known as RED MARIA, on 21st September 2026, at about 11:30am embarked on a targeted operation within the Tamale Metropolis to clamp down on drug peddling, drug use and other related criminal activities,” the Police said in a statement dated September 22.

The operation followed what the Police described as credible intelligence, which led the team to the Tamale Aboabo scraps area near a forest.

A search of Ibrahim Issahaku’s residence reportedly led to the recovery of two foreign-made pistols, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, a parcel of suspected Indian hemp and GH¢1,880 in cash.

The Police also recovered GH¢18,825 allegedly concealed inside a motorcycle belonging to Kwame Boateng at the ghetto.

The money is suspected by investigators to be proceeds from the sale of narcotic drugs.

Other exhibits recovered included 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 sachets of 1mg Rohypnol, seven sachets of 250mg Tramadol, 111 wraps of suspected ashes and three motorbikes.

The five suspects and the exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (RDLEU) for further investigation and necessary action.
