Mahama to build 400-bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu – Kwakye Ofosu

President John Dramani Mahama is set to oversee the construction and equipping of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The project is expected to replace the existing maternity unit and provide expanded facilities for maternal, neonatal and reproductive healthcare.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the development in a social media post on Monday, September 21.

“Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to replace the dilapidated Maternity Unit,” he said.

The proposed facility will include specialised departments and units to support the delivery of maternal and child healthcare services.

These will include obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The block will also house an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.

Other planned facilities include a diagnostic imaging department, laboratory and blood bank facilities, pharmacy, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, as well as teaching, research and conference facilities.
